Heat recovery from industrial waste air

Heat recovery in ventilation systems used to remove air pollutants in the workplace is subject to special requirements. Examples include contamination of the fresh air, corrosion, soiling and condensation in the extract air.
If these are considered at the planning stage, however, a suitable heat recovery unit can be installed that transfers heat or cold from the extract air to the fresh air. Here, it is important that this does not involve any pollutants being exchanged, as any contamination of the fresh air greatly reduces the effect of the ventilation system. For this reason, recirculation is not a form of heat recovery (tip 1: heat recovery).

Key requirements
As industrial ventilation systems are not subject to EU Regulation 1253/2014/EC, there is no minimum value for heat recovery efficiency. Here, an economic efficiency calculation is helpful in finding the optimum solution.
It is a different matter for internal leakage, however: here, the recommended EATR and OACF limit values must be strictly observed (tip 4: leakage).

Special features
With rotary heat exchangers, humidity can also be transferred, increasing comfort and saving costs on air-conditioning systems (tip 7: humidity transfer). In the case of sorption rotary heat exchangers, a suitable coating must be applied to ensure that no odours are transmitted.
The following criteria must also be checked:
- Is output control required?
(Tip 11: output control) - Does condensate occur?
(Tip 5: condensation in the extract air) - Is freezing possible?
(Tip 6: frozen condensate) - Is there a risk of soiling?
(Tip 9: risk of soiling) - Is there a danger of corrosion?
(Tip 13: corrosion resistance) - Is a special design required with respect to temperature?
(Tip 10: temperature resistance)
